The Greek Campus: A Celebration of Diversity and Innovation

Transforming an Abandoned Campus into a Startup Hub

Inspired by the diversity of human beings, the Greek Campus design celebrates all the differences, imperfections, and diversity that make us unique. Designed by Shosha Kamal, this public design project has transformed an abandoned campus into a vibrant startup hub.

An ambitious entrepreneur took over an abandoned campus that once belonged to the American University in Cairo, Egypt. The goal was to turn the historic buildings, once classrooms, into modern office spaces. Shosha Kamal and her team were tasked with renovating the exterior of the ancient Greek building with minimal cost.

What sets this design apart is the innovative use of recycled mannequins. The design team repurposed mannequin pieces in a completely different context, bringing different cultures together. They created a visual spectacle by having "Pharaohs" climb the "Greek" building in a race towards success. This unique installation symbolizes the unity of different cultures and their shared pursuit of achievement.

The team also incorporated recycled mannequin hands in the bathrooms, sending a message of support to the young entrepreneurs. These hands hold mirrors, reminding them of their potential and encouraging them to strive for greatness.

The Greek Campus design showcases the power of sustainability and creativity. The design objective was to utilize the tons of scrap left behind when the university moved and create something meaningful. Scrap metal, wood, abandoned folders, curtain stripes, broken glass, CD cases, electricity wires, and abandoned windows were repurposed to construct a 24-meter exhibition wall.

Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted on the entrepreneurial mindset and how design can enhance productivity and creativity. The team also delved into Egyptian culture, exploring the main motives of productivity and success.

One of the main challenges faced by the design team was to renovate the ancient building while preserving its historic glamour and infusing it with youthful vibrancy. The Greek Campus design successfully achieved this balance, creating a space that honors the past while embracing the future.

The Greek Campus design project began in December 2013 in Cairo, Egypt, and was completed in April 2014. It has garnered recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015 for its sustainable and innovative approach. This award recognizes designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

The Greek Campus design by Shosha Kamal is a testament to the power of creativity, sustainability, and cultural unity. It stands as a symbol of diversity and innovation, inspiring young entrepreneurs to reach for the stars.
